I realize its not exactly jewellery, but I have been very inspired by the work of Kate Macdowell as of late. Her aesthetic sensibility as well as obvious love for nature and fine craftsmanship  seems very much in line with D&D so I think its appropriate to share some of her works here. her website is below if any of you fancy looking at more of her amazing pieces.

From her statement

We do not want merely to see beauty, though, God knows, even that is bounty enough.  We want something else which can hardly be put into words–to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it. – C.S. Lewis.”

I had a wonderful surprise today when the amazing and extremely generous Stephen Johnson gifted me one of the giant bows from his Happy Happy series (you can see that and his other fantastic work on his website  So now that I have this beautiful piece, I need to figure out where to hang it, but in the meantime I must admit I am really liking the way it looks on my dining room table… it makes the whole thing look like a giant gift!

Thank you so much Stephen, I look forward to seeing what your next project will bring!

By Märta,

Kelly and I recently decided to start making some pieces using some of the other ones pieces/materials. Kelly sent me a role of her lovely anatomical wallpaper and I got to do whatever I wanted with it. I have been working on some jewellery with wallpaper lately in my series ‘coming out’ where I camouflage beetles and blend them into their backgrounds. I chose to make a necklace with cut outs of Kellys wallpaper and combined it with wood and electroformed and lacquered beetles.

Artist Profile: Julie Impens

After a short hiatus we are back, and I thought it would be appropriate to begin with an artist profile on the wonderful and talented Julie Impens. Her collection of jewellery is inspired by Marie Antoinette and the splendour of the costuming and elegance at of the courts of Versailles. Her interpretation is both modern and fresh, while still keeping the feel of nostalgia for this time gone by. I am particularly fond of the bracelets in the first image, the combination of the lace like metalwork and the white ruffles create a beautiful fusion. The pendent in the last image also has the quality of an amulet to me, the layers of patten and stone, taking on an almost magical power.

Diamonds and Dead Things review in Craft Magazine by Kelly

August 26, 2011 § Leave a comment

I know its been a while since we had our show at Mint Gallery in mayfair, but I thought I would  post this review that was published in Craft Magazine this month, which I must say we were both very pleased with. If you missed Diamonds and Dead things debut show, have no fear there will be another! Although we cant promise it will be soon (Working from two different countries has its own challenges, especially when you have been as busy as we have been the last few months!) But just remember good things come to those who wait! We have some definite plans in the pipeline for another show, and are hoping to have some exciting new work to show you! In the meantime please take a look at our review (If you haven’t already read it in Crafts Magazine) and keep an eye on this space, as there might possibly be another  D&D project coming up!
